It's a very interesting haiku. In my opinion it clearly enough expresses a winter mood, when a long cold season is just beginning and   grandpa covers the warm fingers of a toddler with his hand...

初雪や早春感ずる桜の芽

“芽” is better and the total is natural.
In Japanese , your haiku is 5-8-5. Only one is jiamari.
I already corrected it at my blog.
